What does AR have to do with the Metaverse?
Taking reality and making it better.
So what is the Metaverse exactly? Well, talking about the Metaverse is a bit like trying to talk about the internet in 1972. Is it a chatroom? A more sophisticated version of the Sims, or the new Zoom? It’s hard to pinpoint right now, we don’t know exactly what it’s going to look like, but there are a few things we do know.
What does ‘Metaverse’ mean?
The current version of the Metaverse is made up of a few technologies. Virtual reality plays a huge part, having permanent virtual spaces that exist even when you’re not there. Augmented Reality combines parts of the virtual ‘metaversal’ world and the real world.
A digital economy, here users can buy, sell, create and trade virtual objects and NFT’s - yes you can currently do all of this in virtual gaming worlds but the Metaverse will allow for these objects, personas and avatars to be used right across the metaversal experience. Set that alter-ego free because in the Metaverse you can be whoever you want!
So how does Augmented Reality fit in here?
Well, AR glasses are close…so, so, so close to being released. Not everyone is going to be interested in sitting wearing a full VR headset to experience the Metaverse, AR glasses are going to reduce that friction and encourage mass adoption. In face, we’d go so far as to say that in the next 10 years AR hardware and software will dominate, and phones, tablets and desktops will slowly fade out of our lives. The Metaverse of the future will be an extension of the virtual world, into our day to day reality extending the same object permanence of virtual worlds into real time. Imagine being able to design the reality that you see, experiencing the world's landmarks as they were in that past or seeing others as the avatar they want to be seen by.
How can brands leverage the ‘Metaverse’?
Brands need to know that their audiences, especially Gen Y and below, seek out social environments as well as immersive virtual experiences. This isn’t about entering an existing world, but building and being part of these interactive spaces and experiences.
AR Metaversal experiences not only build deeper relationships with the brand, but also loyalty and ownership. As the Metaverse evolves and more technology is made available, now is the time to take the opportunity to get on board and start experimenting in this new digital space.
